What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of biocompatible materials, such as titanium, that are surgically placed into the jawbone. These implants provide a sturdy foundation for replacement teeth, which can be crowns, bridges, or even dentures. Unlike traditional options, dental implants mimic the look and function of natural teeth, offering unmatched stability and durability.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Dental implants have become the gold standard for replacing missing teeth due to their numerous benefits:

  • Implants look and feel like natural teeth, blending seamlessly with your smile.
  • Unlike removable dentures, implants restore full chewing ability, allowing you to enjoy your favourite foods.
  • Implants stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss and maintaining facial structure.
  • With proper care, dental implants can last for decades.
  • Say goodbye to gaps and ill-fitting dentures. Implants give you a confident, worry-free smile.

Who Qualifies for Dental Implants?

Most adults with missing teeth are potential candidates for dental implants. However, certain factors determine suitability:

  • A healthy jawbone is essential to support the implant. If bone loss has occurred, bone grafting may be recommended.
  • Healthy gums are crucial for successful implant placement.
  • Certain medical conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking, may affect healing.

Our team at Springvale Dental Group will conduct a comprehensive assessment to ensure you’re an ideal candidate. If any preparatory procedures, such as bone grafting or periodontal treatment, are required, we’ll guide you through the process.

How Are Dental Implants Fitted?

The dental implant procedure involves several steps, ensuring precision and long-lasting results:

  • Initial Consultation: During your first visit, we’ll perform a thorough examination, including X-rays and 3D scans, to evaluate your oral health and jawbone structure.
  • Treatment Planning: We’ll create a customised treatment plan tailored to your needs and discuss all options with you.
  • Implant Placement: Under local anaesthesia, the implant is surgically placed into the jawbone. Over the next few months, the implant integrates with the bone in a process called osseointegration.
  • Abutment Placement: Once healed, a small connector (abutment) is attached to the implant.
  • Crown or Prosthesis Placement: Finally, a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture is secured to the abutment, completing your new smile.

Types of Dental Implants

At Springvale Dental Group, we offer various implant options to suit different needs:

  • Single-Tooth Implants: Ideal for replacing a single missing tooth.
  • Implant-Supported Bridges: Replace multiple missing teeth with fewer implants.
  • All-on-4 Implants: A full-arch restoration using just four strategically placed implants.
  • Mini Implants: A smaller option for patients with limited bone density.

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?

The cost of dental implants varies based on several factors, including the number of implants, type of restoration, and any additional procedures. While implants may have a higher upfront cost compared to other options, their longevity and benefits make them a cost-effective choice over time.

At Springvale Dental Group, we believe in transparency. During your consultation, we’ll provide a detailed breakdown of costs and discuss flexible payment plans to suit your budget.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Choosing dental implants offers numerous advantages:

  • Implants are designed to last a lifetime with proper care.
  • No more slipping or discomfort, as implants are securely anchored.
  • Restore clear and confident speech, free from worries about dentures shifting.
  • Unlike dentures, implants don’t require removal or adhesives.

FAQs about Dental Implants

Dental implants have been used for over 30 years with proven success. The materials used in implants are highly compatible with the human body, making them a safe and durable option for replacing missing teeth.

In Australia, most health insurance extras policies do not cover dental implants. However, if you have high-level extras cover, you may get partial coverage for major dental procedures like implants. Many extras cover policies include basic dental treatments such as check-ups and fillings but exclude complex procedures such as dental implants.

To qualify for dental implants, you should have a reasonably strong jawbone, no active gum disease (periodontitis), and be non-smoker. Every case is unique, so we recommend discussing your specific situation with your dentist, who will review your medical history during your consultation to determine if implants are suitable for you.

There are three primary types of dental implants:

  • Endosseous Implants: These screw or cylinder-shaped implants are placed into the jawbone and made of metal, ceramic, or ceramic-coated metal.
  • Subperiosteal Implants: These implants rest on top of the jawbone, below the gum tissue, and are used when the patient lacks sufficient bone height.
  • Transosteal Implants: A metal pin or U-shaped frame is placed through the jawbone and gum tissue into the mouth.

The process of placing a single dental implant typically takes 1-2 hours. After the implant has successfully integrated with the jawbone (a process known as osseointegration), it may take 3-9 months before your dentist can fit a crown or bridge over the implant.

Recovery times can vary depending on factors such as the condition of your jawbone, the number of teeth replaced, and whether bone or gum grafting is required. In general, most people feel back to normal within a few days, though complete healing of the jawbone and gum tissue can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months.
